Texas Cities Have High Number Of Dog Bite Attacks

May 21, 2013

A new study has concluded that Texas Dog Bite Injuries may be more prevalent than previously believed. Reports indicate that several cities in the state have been listed in the top 20 cities where citizens are most likely to be the victims of canine attacks.

According to an article from KVUE News, the study examined the number of postal workers who had been attacked in each state over the course of the past year. Researchers were able to deduce from the findings that the city of San Antonio tied for second place in the nation for the highest number of bites. During 2012, postal workers in the city reported a total of 42 dog bite incidents. Houston wasn’t far behind, coming in ninth place, while Dallas held the 13th place slot.

These findings leave many citizens wondering what can be done to reduce the number of dog bites that are recorded annually in Texas. The U.S. Postal Service has implemented a policy to protect its workers that states a letter carrier can skip delivery at a home if they feel threatened by an animal. The home’s owner is then responsible for picking up their mail at a local office.

The organization also suggests dog owners enroll their animals in obedience courses and keep the dogs restrained on leashes when a letter carrier arrives.

Woman Loses Legs and Fingers After Texas Dog Bite Injury

March 19, 2013

Complications from a Texas Dog Bite have left a Leander, Texas, woman permanently disabled.

The Austin American-Statesman discussed how the 48-year-old victim had suffered a minor bite wound to her hand and ankle on Christmas Day. She thought nothing of the incident until she became violently ill the following day.

She was taken to a local hospital, where doctors were able to determine the woman had contracted a deadly blood infection. Dr. Kristin Mondy, who treated the victim, explained the bacteria responsible for the illness, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, is found in the saliva of around one-third of all healthy dogs.

The infection resulted in the woman suffering from kidney failure and a host of other ailments that eventually led to her legs and nine fingers needing to be amputated.

Mondy stated the condition is extremely rare, with only 56 cases of the infection being recorded over a 32-year period. To put this into perspective, dogs bite more than one million people per year.

Despite the slim chances of contracting the deadly infection, experts encourage anyone who sustains a dog bite to have the injury examined by a medical professional. Also, watch the bite for redness, swelling, or pain, for several days after the incident, as these may be signs of an infection.

Texas Woman Seriously Injured In Texas Dog Attack

October 30, 2012

An 80-year-old east Texas woman was seriously injured following an attack she suffered from a pack of neighborhood dogs last week. According to KLTV 7 News, the incident occurred at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday along County Road 1113, outside Overton, Texas.

A spokesperson for the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Vicki Penny, stated the woman was walking along the road after picking up her newspaper when she was cornered by a group a mixed breed dogs that were owned by a neighbor. The woman attempted to fight the five animals off, but she was overcome and suffered extensive Texas Dog Bite injuries to her arms legs and torso. Luckily though, a witness saw the attack and was able to fend the animals off in order to offer the woman assistance until rescue crews arrived to take the woman to a local hospital.

Doctors determined the woman’s leg injuries might prevent her from ever walking again, and her leg may have to be amputated.

Deputies say all the animals involved were put down and that charges against the owner of the animals may be filed at the conclusion of an investigation.

The Austin Personal Injury Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers say dog owners have a responsibility to ensure their animals are safe for others to be around or are properly secured at all times. Failure to do so could be considered negligence in the event of an attack.

77-Year-old Texas Woman Mauled In Vicious Dog Attack

February 21, 2012

A 77-year-old woman in Wichita Falls, Texas, was severely injured last Thursday after being attacked by two dogs during her morning walk around her neighborhood.  According to reports from KSDK News, the attack took place around 10:00 AM at the 1600 block of Grandview West.

The woman was rounding the corner of the block when she was met by the two large, grayish-blue dogs. They immediately pounced on her and began to bite. The woman began crying for help and was soon assisted by a male college student who began to fight the dogs off with a stick. The animals quickly turned to come after him as well.

Luckily, three witnesses who passed by stopped and helped the pair ward off the dogs by throwing several Bibles at the animals. It was enough to hold the dogs off until fire department rescue crews arrived at the scene.

The woman was taken to a local hospital to be treated for 12 puncture wounds to the head, a deep bite to the stomach, and several other lacerations to her arms.

This is not the first time that Animal Control has been called to handle the dogs, which are currently being held until a municipal judge decides what should be done with them.
